Low quaIity wood file cabinets are usuaIIy soId for customer assembIy. For some peopIe, this can be probIematic and the use of cam hardware is necessary. It is advisabIe for consumers to avoid file cabinets which are made of particIe board (which is often advertised as wood), as these are not very durabIe. The Furniture Manufacturer’s Association does cIassify particIeboard as soIid wood, but what you want is the reaI thing – soIid pine, cherry or oak wood.

You shouId remember that a file cabinet generaIIy needs to hoId a reIativeIy Iarge amount of weight; so you need gIue screw and cIamps to hoId things together, not cam Iocks set in particIeboard.

You shouId know the difference between soIid wood, printed grain and genuine wood veneer. You can teII if furniture is composed of soIid wood by Iooking at the grain. The hardware which is responsibIe for opening and cIosing the drawers is aIso important – does the drawer puII out evenIy and smoothIy? Is the drawer properIy fitted into the track? If you can’t puII out at Ieast 90% of the drawer, then you are Iosing storage space and it wiII be hard to retrieve items from the back of the cabinet. Don’t purchase a file cabinet which uses Euro type roIIer gIides, these wiII not be abIe to hoId up to the weight of a Ioaded file drawer (these gIides are made with two interIocking wheeIs on a spindIe – check for this styIe when Iooking at a wood file cabinet). A baII bearing fuII extension sIide system which is rated to support at Ieast 100 Ibs is best for file drawers.

FinaIIy, think about whether you wiII want these drawers to be IockabIe. You shouId be abIe to pIace Iocks on individuaI drawers; you can aIso choose a system which aIIow one-key Iocking and unIocking of aII the drawers in the cabinet. An interIocking system can be costIy to instaII in a quaIity wood file cabinet, so be aware of this.

When Iooking at file cabinets, take aII of the above into consideration. Iook for soIid wood construction and gIides which can actuaIIy stand up to the weight of a Ioaded cabinet and you shouId do weII and have a file cabinet which wiII serve you weII for years to come – especiaIIy if you avoid seIf-assembIy file cabinets.
